The proliferation of chess podcasts demonstrates, once again, that chess is not only a game, but a whole subculture that has grown around the sport. Perfect proof of that is the coffee-table book “Chess in Art” which was published last summer. Through 300 colorful pages, this book collects depictions of chess in art during the period from 1100 to 1900, by more than 700 different artists. And not only that, the author, Peter Herel Raabenstein, places them in a historical context, providing a lot of background and interesting histories. “Chess in Art” is the first book of Raabenstein, a painter who also happens to be a chess player. But it probably won’t be the last, since all those who bought this masterpiece are already demanding a second volume, dealing with the period from 1900 onwards.
